To do, or not… to be

Hello blog, nice to see you again!

It’s been a busy year – which seems a strange thing to say when I’ve technically been out of work since the end of April – and there’s lot’s to catch up on. Here’s a brief summary:

  • Left the mountains behind
  • Turned down a job offer and left Kent
  • Interview, job offer and potential move to a remote part of Scotland
  • Reunited with brother after 8 years
  • Trip to China – learnt a bit of the language, learnt a lot about the food
  • Discovered KTV – it turns out I love Karaoke as long as I can sing Disney songs!
  • Desires – both to travel and to learn a language – reignited
  • Rediscovered Shanghai after a 12 year absence (yes, had a brief stint living there during the SARS crisis, but that’s another story)
  • Joined a new group at church and made a whole new bunch of awesome friends
  • First time not working (and looking for work) ever in my lifetime
  • First experiences with the benefits system – thank the Lord it exists! (Even though it’s a faff, I’m incredibly grateful it’s there!)
  • 12+ CVs, 40+ job applications, 3+ interviews
  • Lost a family member far far FAR too young – our own gentle giant
  • Date, nothing, date, nothing…
  • First paid ski instructor job where I somehow end up losing money rather than earning
  • 2 new additions to our household (kittens, not babies)
  • Learnt to make bread (flat x2 and wholemeal x1) and learnt to make yoghurt
  • Rediscovered my love for the humble bicycle
  • Started building a new website (coming soon – very different to this one)
  • Hurt my knee while instructing – mystery ligament injury
  • Haven’t had an income since last October. 11 months
  • Been blown away by miraculous unexpected provision and by the generosity of friends

We have a greed with which we have agreed
And you think you have to want more than you need
Until you have it all, you won’t be free

Society, you’re a crazy breed
I hope you’re not lonely without me

When you want more than you have, you think you need
And when you think more than you want, your thoughts begin to bleed
I think I need to find a bigger place
Cause when you have more than you think, you need more space

Moving on

Yes, it’s true. I am moving South. (Then a bit more South, across the Channel, East a bit etc…) To be honest, I don’t know exactly where I’ll be between December and April, but there will be stretches of various lengths in other countries (as well as heck of a lot of time on coaches I expect!!)

This is a post I’ve written and re-written multiple times and never been happy enough with to post. So I’m doing it anyway. Just as it is. Here is my stream of thoughts and a brief explanation of the upcoming changes in my life: Continue reading
